E-Bike Touring Tips

by Elaine Ford

So, you’re ready to take on an e-bike adventure—brilliant choice! Whether you’re gearing up for a weekend ride or a multi-day tour, being prepared is key. Pack light, don’t rush, and, most importantly, enjoy the ride.

When it comes to packing for an e-bike tour, there are some things to think about - You have limited space and you want to be light. And over long distances, punctures are pretty much a part of it. And yes, at some point, you’ll find yourself in the middle of nowhere wishing you’d brought that one thing. But don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. Here’s some tips you need to know to stay prepared on your adventure!

Packing Essentials for E-Bike Travel

Pack Light and Smart

  • Use panniers and distribute weight evenly

  • Stick to minimalist, travel-size, and multi-purpose items to save space.

  • Store heavier items low and near the center of the bike for better balance and control.

  • If you’re bringing an extra bag make sure it’s securely fastened with durable straps. A poorly secured bag can unbalance your bike, making handling tricky on bumpy trails or hilly climbs.

Stay Waterproof

Rain happens—be ready for it!

  • Use waterproof panniers or bag liners to protect your gear.

  • Keep essentials like snacks, a battery pack, an extra layer, and waterproofs in an easy-to-reach, weatherproof compartment.

Carry the Basics for Bike Repairs
Equip yourself with a toolkit for on-the-go fixes. When you’re out in the wild - you’ll be so glad you brought it!

E-Bike Battery Management Tips

Efficient battery management is fun and key to a great e-bike adventure. Here’s how to make the most of your power:

Know What Affects Battery Range

E-bike range isn’t fixed—it depends on:

  • Weight: Your weight, luggage, and the bike’s weight all impact battery usage.

  • Wind: Headwinds drain power faster, while tailwinds help conserve it.

  • Pedal-Assist Levels: Higher settings are great for tough climbs but eat through the battery quicker.

  • Elevation: Climbing hills takes more power, but descents or even smooth flat roads let you coast and conserve energy.

  • Temperature: Batteries aren’t fans of the cold—expect reduced efficiency in chilly weather.

Plan Power Usage:

  • Use lower assist levels (0-1) on flat terrain or with a tailwind to save energy.

  • Reserve higher assistance settings for steep hills or challenging stretches.

  • Plan your route to include charging stops—cafes, garages, or accommodations

  • If you’re heading into remote areas or tackling long, hilly routes, bring a spare battery if you can manage the weight and space.

Tips for E-Bike Travel

Regular Maintenance Tips

Keeping your bike in top shape is essential for a smooth journey:

  • Daily Checks: Ensure your tires are inflated to the right pressure, chains are lubricated, and nuts and bolts are tightened (vibrations can loosen them over time).

  • Lights: Check your bike’s lights regularly, especially if you’re riding at dawn, dusk, or night.

Weather and Safety Prep

  • Bring waterproof layers that are easy to grab when the weather turns.

  • Pack gloves, a neck warmer, and layers for fluctuating temperatures.

  • Sunglasses are essential and use sunscreen or buff to protect your face

  • Wear a helmet. A helmet with a visor—is a game-changer for rain and wind, keeping your vision clear so long as you keep it clean.

Fuel and Hydration

Long rides demand fuel—don’t skimp on snacks and hydration:

  • Carry a water bottle or hydration pack, and electrolyte tablets

  • Pack energy-dense snacks like nuts, granola bars, and fruit to keep you going.

Mindful Exploration

If there’s one piece of advice I’d give you, it’s this: keep an open mind, stay curious, and don’t rush. Slow down, stop to soak in the views, chat with locals, watch the sunset and explore. Cycling unlocks new experiences. Take the time to connect—with the landscapes you pass through, the wildlife you encounter, and the stories the land holds. From ruins of a medieval castle, an ancient forest, or a vibrant town square, every place has a story to tell.

These are the moments where the magic happens, and they’re the memories you’ll carry with you long after the ride ends.
